Everything Under One Roof – A Steel Roof as an Unmissable Eyecatcher

The main entrance of Messe Nürnberg shines in new splendour

Nuremberg is one of the most important fair and conference cities in Germany. The trade fair site is among the top ten in Europe and is even one of the 20 biggest in the world. Nuremberg’s trade fair centre is especially known for its international, highly specialised trade fairs with precise orientation to the respective target groups. Due to the constantly growing numbers of visitors, the exhibition area was enlarged from its initial 60,000 m2 to its current 160,000 m2.

During the past ten years, more than 400 million euros have been invested into the quantitative, but also qualitative expansion of the fair and conference site.

For the redevelopment of the area “Entrance, Service and Conference Central Area” NürnbergMesse again invested a total of 47 million euros in the quality. The reconstruction had become necessary, because the old Central Area – having been part of the site’s early 70s phase of construction ― could no longer meet increasing requirements for visitor registration, modern conference capacities and sufficient catering and service zones.

In 2008 the consortium Arbeitsgemeinschaft Messe Nürnberg (consisting of the companies Heinrich Rohlfing GmbH, Profil Stahl- und Metallbau, Stahlbau Heenemann and Dachbau Staßfurt), under the direction of Nürnberg-Messe GmbH, started to realise the designs of the architecture agency kadawittfeldarchitektur from Aachen. After completion of the expansion and redevelopment of the entire entrance and service complex of Nürnberg Messe, it is intended to house the foyer, restaurant area, service areas and “Brüssel” hall in the continuously glazed 4,400 m2 entrance building.

The roof, which is larger than a football pitch, covers the entire forecourt of the West/Central/Frankenhalle Area with its taxi stands and the bus stops and the new entrance hall of the Central Area and protects visitors against wind and weather outside and inside.

The steel slats of the roof construction and the mounting aids were hot dip galvanized in the Rietbergwerke, coated white in certain areas and protected against corrosion by this surface finishing. The steel parts were then transported from Rietberg to Nuremberg about 400 km away. The load-bearing framework of the roof was completely clad with Alucobond slabs. The roof itself weighs an impressive 1,500 t. Despite this weight, the slatted roof can be supported by twelve columns.

Another special feature of the roof are the air cushions between the slats, which are light-permeable and substantially lighter than e.g. glass elements. Constructions of this kind are extremely rare. A comparable type of construction can currently be admired at the Allianz-Arena in Munich. On 29 August 2010 the entire entrance complex of the fair site in Nuremberg was completed and officially inaugurated on the margins of the “European Chemistry Congress” which started on that day.
