Floating away

No problem with big numbers: our colleagues at Ocynkownia Śląsk Kluczbork have been providing galvanized components for the biggest network of urban cable cars in the world – a transport method of the future.

The sky is the most beautiful blue. A hint of red can be seen in the distance. As the gondola slowly travels upwards, the views become spectacular: the ocean of houses on the slopes below, and the snow-covered peaks of the Illimani mountains on the horizon. Yet the cable cars in La Paz offer its passengers far more than this: an almost meditative trip without any of the smells, crowds or noises that are normal down below.

Bath-width and keeping to deadlines are very important

It was in the capital city of Bolivia, with the highest seat of government in the world, that President Evo Morales officially opened the "Linea Roja" in the year 2014. It was manufactured by the Vorarlberg-based company Doppelmayr, and connects La Paz with its neighbouring city of El Alto over a distance of 2,349 metres. And there is also a lot of Seppeler to be found in this innovative large-scale project. This is because Gassner Stahlbau – a company which is part of the Doppelmayr Group – has been manufacturing the cable car supports before sending the oversized steel supports to us at Ocynkownia Śląsk Kluczbork for galvanizing. This comes as no surprise, since with a working bath-width of 2.80 metres, Kluczbork has the widest galvanizing bath in Europe. And it’s a width that not everyone can offer.

Protection against corrosion is an important topic with cable cars in particular. The hot dip galvanizing means that the supports are protected against rust for several decades, even in difficult climate conditions. In addition to the standardized galvanizing according to the DIN ISO 1461, there was also a major logistical challenge. This encompassed both the transport to Poland and back as well as the on-schedule loading onto overseas containers. In the international sphere, keeping to deadlines is the most important requirement for the success of a project.

Cable cars float away from the traffic chaos

Many people will be likely to know cable cars from skiing regions or tourist destinations. They are a rare sight in cities – at least until now. According to the statistics portal "Statista", by 2030, 60 percent of the world's population will live in cities. Structures of urban settlement are becoming increasingly complex and there is a threat of traffic chaos. What is the best way of connecting urban districts together, how can people best commute between their home and work, and how can people and the environment be protected at the same time? Doppelmayr believes cable car systems to be a multi-talented solution for such challenges. They simply float away from the infrastructure and are environmentally friendly, safe and comfortable as well.

La Paz at least, which is situated in the Andes at an altitude of 3,200 to 4,100 meters above sea level, believes in what they offer. The 1,000,000th passenger mark was crossed only one month after the "Linea Roja" opened. Three lines are now operating very successfully, and over the next four years, another six are set to open – which, according to Doppelmayr, will make it the biggest urban cable car network in the world.
