Refuelling 2.0 – Full Transparency

Most important motto on construction sites: Everything must run. This includes all devices and machines; therefore, they are are refuelled with diesel on site. Any attempts to measure this consumption have so far been laborious and prone to errors. The new automatic refuelling stations in Rietberg fuel tanks counteract this. And it is worth it!

Many of our customers have experienced this issue. The diesel consumption on construction sites cannot be measured. However, what cannot be measured cannot be evaluated and thus cannot be optimized. We are talking about a total of 5 percent of the diesel used on construction sites which cannot be allocated properly. When assuming that a medium-sized company consumes an average of 1,000,000 litres of diesel per year, the following becomes clear: In total, a huge sum of money is involved here.

Any efforts to solve this problem have not been very efficient so far. For instance, many construction companies deploy employees who are in charge of refuelling. This is ensured with a key for the station. However, this procedure requires a clean manual documentation; therefore, refuelling logs are used in many companies. Generally, this is a good thing but not suitable for construction sites: The pen might be missing, the book might get soiled and illegible or might have disappeared.

Easy controlling
True, modern devices and machines are already equipped with a corresponding electronic system by means of which one can accurately read the litres they have consumed. However, the comparison of the values from the fuelling log, the counter of the tank and the machine data has always been very laborious. "The time savings and the easy handling are a great benefit", Rainer Oelmeier, site manager at Hagedorn, explained.

Since the beginning of the year, our customer Hagedorn Rietberger has been testing diesel containers of the Quadro series. The innovation: The fuel containers can be equipped with integrated automatic refuelling stations. The full service provider, who, among others, implements earth work and exploitation construction sites, reported first favourable results. "The automatic stations record the diesel consumption fully automatically!" Patrick Wulf, technical purchasing manager at Hagedorn, explained.

The sophisticated technology in the small black boxes closes the gap between employees, device electronics and refuelling station. While the fuel flows in one direction, the station stores all necessary data. The benefits are clear: Read via a secure USB interface by the construction company, on the one hand, the data shows when and for which machine the fuel is used. On the other hand, the digitally recorded documentation also simplifies the controlling afterwards to a great extent: possible billing, e.g. with subcontractors, but also the own calculations for further fuel consumption can be optimized. Mr Wulf agreed: "This is a fantastic solution for using all the potential for the economic success of our company!"

Small but nice
The test run at Hagedorn has shown: The handling is easy, while the operation is intuitive. Employees and subcontractors who need access to the refuelling station will receive an encoded transponder in addition to the mechanical key. The users identify themselves by holding the transponder in front of the system; the vehicle and/or machine data is inserted via a protected keyboard. Only then is the refuelling released.

Another problem could also be solved: The box can be operated with 12 and with 24 V, and thus operate both large machines and small devices. Even though it is operated in a highly modern and electronic manner, it does not need full power supply the entire time. After each refuelling process, the voltage is automatically decreased. Mr Hagedorn is pleased: "We will gradually retrofit all of our refuelling stations." This investment is also profitable for other reasons: Naturally, the tanks are hot-dip galvanized and will last decades.
