Steel sculpture "Space – Time"
Since May 2008, a very special work of art has been a topic of conversation at the intersection of federal highways B8 and B67 in Rees am Niederrhein: the steel sculpture “Space – Time” by artist Gisela Mewes. As part of a public tender, the artist convinced the town authorities with her sculpture and obtained the mandate to produce the work of art.
“Space – Time” is a 10 metre-high structure with a total scope of 30 metres. The six balls with diameters of between 1.8 and 3 metres are defining elements of the sculpture. For the balls alone, 370 metres of round steel were curved and brought into shape by the artist from Hessisch-Oldendorf.
From the purchase of the steel and the production of a structure suitable for hot dip galvanizing to transportation to the construction site, “Space – Time” was implemented in close cooperation with Feuerverzinkung Hannover.
Several hundred visitors, including employees of the Seppeler Group, ensured a festival mood in Rees at the inauguration of the sculpture. At the handover, the mayor praised the logistical performance and emphasized that Rees had now been enriched by a much-admired landmark.
